low-end teamwork

It’s been a bit of a surprise and a great honor to be invited to participate in the Zhejiang Conservatory Winds Festival this year, being that I’m a string player. My friend and colleague Associate Principal Cello of Suzhou Symphony Orchestra Claudius Lepetit will also be joining the festival this year, and as the only two string players around we’ve decided to collaborate for a performance of Rossini’s Duo for Cello and Double Bass. I’m particularly excited for this opportunity not only for the upcoming performance but also a chance to work with the double bass students from the conservatory the afternoon before the performance. I find that as a foreigner, giving any sort of lecture or Master Class comes with the expectation that one is to bring something new to the discussion that perhaps isn’t a popular method or concept in that country or region. I’m really looking forward to sharing my ideas about the use of the overtone series on the double bass, especially because the pentatonic scale, the foundation for almost all traditional Chinese music, is such a beautiful representation of harmonics in sequence!
