My story
Troy Morris, an Illinois native, graduated magna cum laude from Webster University in 2015, where he studied classical double bass under the instruction of Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra principal bass Erik Harris. Shortly after graduation, Troy made a move to China where he began to develop his career as a performer and educator. In August of 2016 Troy joined Guiyang Symphony Orchestra in Guiyang, Guizhou Province. After completing the 2016/17 music season in Guiyang, another round of auditions led Troy to Suzhou, Jiangsu Province where he served in the double bass section of Suzhou Symphony Orchestra from 2017 to 2021.
During Troy’s time in Suzhou, he performed in cities across China, Asia, Europe, and North America including Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Esplanade in Singapore, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Notable guest conductors and soloists Troy has shared the stage with include Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Roberto Abbado, Daniel Oren, John Axlerod, Lucienne Renaudin Vary, Hui He and many more.
A speaker of Mandarin Chinese, Troy has been called upon to host numerous concerts and events for Chinese speaking audiences. In 2021, he wrote and performed his own narration in Chinese for a multimedia showcase of Camille Saint- Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. Troy was also a finalist in the 2021 Singing Competition of Chinese Songs by Foreigners in Jiangsu Province.
As an educator, Troy has given performances and master classes at universities throughout China. He currently teaches double bass at Nantong University School of Art.
Troy resides in Shanghai where he works as a teacher and performer of various styles of music. He performs frequently at venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai, House of Blues and Jazz, and JZ Club Shanghai.
